The 2012 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought goes to lawyer and imprisoned opposition activist Nasrin Sotoudeh and movie director and 1995 Cannes Caméra d’Or winner Jafar Panahi, both from Iran.
Parliament president Schulz stated the award “is a message of solidarity and recognition to a woman and a man who have not been bowed by fear and intimidation and who have decided to put the fate of their country before their own.”
